Rich Bourgoin Runs Away with the Title at
Foxwoods World Poker Finals!
2006 World Poker Finals
World Poker Tour Season 5
Tournament Report
Event #8
$1,100 + $100
No Limit Hold'em
A record number of 872 players entered the $1200 No-Limit Hold'em event in
the
2006 World Poker Finals $1200 No-Limit Hold'em Championship. The prize
pool totaled $933,334 and Richard Bourgoin of Lewiston, ME, rolled to victory
and claimed the First Place prize of $270,667!

His last obstacle on his road to victory was overcoming Joseph Haddad, who
had scratched his way from one of the short stacks on the final table into 2nd
place. Entering heads up action, Rich held a 4 to 1 chip advantage over Joe.
Joe survived a couple of all-ins before laying it on the line with pocket 7's.
Rich had Js-8s; the flop came 9h-3s-2s, the turn was a 7 which gave Joe a
set. Unfortunately, it was a spade and Rich had a flush and Joe, who hails
from Portland, OR, was in 2nd place with $141,400.

Third place was claimed by Darren Nelson of Niagara Falls, NY. Darren lost
two large pots to each of his opponents before finally being all-in with 9h-4h.
He had the flush draw going to the river but he could not connect and Rich's
3's were good. Darren collected $74,667 for his efforts.

Fourth place finisher Matt Brady was also looking for the flush when he went
all-in with 2c-3c. Two clubs on the flop gave him a draw but it was not to be;
his last $440K went to Joe who had A-K. Matt had earlier been all-in with 4-2
suited against Rich's pocket 6's; he won that hand with a 2 on the flop and
the turn to keep himself in the game for quite some time.

Matt will return to Havertown, PA, with $51,333. Our 5th Place winner was
local player Paul Tassopoulos of Fairhaven, MA. Paul never fully recovered
from the first hand of the final table when he called Joe's Ac-10 all-in with A-K.
When Joe caught the club flush on the river Paul was behind and could never
catch up. He was all-in with A-9 against Darren's K-J; the board was
10-10-Q-6-9 which gave Darren a straight and left Paul with $42,000 to ease
the ride home.

Robert Suydam of Sayville, NY, took 6th position when he could not pair his
K-J to top Matt's pocket 5's. Rob claimed $32,667. The blinds were at
$20K/$40K when Jim Bernard was all-in with A-10, He was behind Joe with
A-K, caught up with a 10 on the flop and was relegated to 7th place when a
K came on the river.

Jim takes $28,000 back to Barrington, RI. Ed Gavin of Canton, MA, lost two
significant hands which left him with only $13K for his final all-in. His K-10 lost
to Paul Tassopoulos' K-8 when Paul paired both cards and his pocket 8's lost
to Matt's A-10 when a 10 came on the turn. Ed collected $23,334 for his
efforts. Pocket 8's were also unlucky for Victor Amereno of Stamford, CT.

Darren had J-10 and caught 10's on the flop and turn for trips to put Vic in
9th place with $18,666. A most enthusiastic participant was the 10th place
finisher Paul Nadeau of Auburn, NH. Paul was at a decided chip disadvantage
but by the time he went all-in with pocket 5's, he had more than tripled his
stack. Ed, however, turned over pocket J's and Paul finished 10th good for
$14,467.

Rich had started the night as the clear chip leader and he ended the night as
the 2006 Champion of $1200 No- Limit Hold'em. He had the Championship
crystal trophy, commemorative leather jacket and $210,667!
