The question of whether the recent dramatic increase in poker play is a fad or is here to stay is a legitimate one. I love to play poker. I play poker online quite often, and visit Atlantic City and Las Vegas as often as possible to play poker. I especially enjoy sitting in my recliner in the comfort of my own home and playing in cash games and tournaments in various online poker rooms.
There have been many instances in which the n thing to do fades away, such as with fashion, or even lifestyles. People sometimes do change their habits and customs over time. The recent boom in poker play is a phenomenon. Just a couple of years ago, no one knew who Daniel Negreanu was, let alone the likes of Chris Moneymaker, who is often referred to as the "Godfather of the Poker Revolution." The thought of winning millions of dollars from a small investment into a satellite tournament has enticed many to try their hand at playing online and live poker tournaments. Almost all of the online poker sites, as well as land-based poker rooms, are running satellite tournaments to win a seat into the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event and World Poker Tour (WPT) events. You can even win a free seat into the main event at many poker rooms online.
Historically, poker players were generally thought of as criminals and degenerates. Now the very same players, like Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson, are regarded as professional poker players, and are being offered endorsements from major corporations and online poker rooms. No one could ever have imagined such a transformation just a few years ago. I believe that poker is definitely here to stay. The evidence is overwhelming. My grandmother plays poker, my parents play poker, I play poker, and my teenage nephew and his friends play poker. This phenomenon has no gender barriers, and no age barriers. You can play in free tournaments and win real prizes and tournament entries. You can play at most online poker rooms for pennies, nickels, and dimes, and you can play at home in your recliner. What more could you ask for...in my opinion the future potential for poker is unlimited.
