Playing Strong and Experienced Players
Inevitably at some point in your poker life, you will find yourself facing strong
players. How can you handle these situations to insure maximum profit for
yourself and prevent these poker sharks from eating you alive?

Trying to avoid them

The best advice in this situation is just to avoid these players. Although
everyone thinks they are a great poker player, in reality, there are not that
many to go around, and with a little work you should be able to find a game
with weaker players. Even if you sit in a game with a very strong player, you
can do well by targeting other players at the table and avoiding
confrontations with the pro.

Mustering up the confidence

What happens if you do get into confrontations with the experienced player?
Keep in mind that this player will probably employ a tight aggressive style,
meaning he will usually enter the pot only with strong hands, and then bet
them strongly to put pressure on you to fold. For this reason, when you enter
a pot with this player, you must do so with confidence. Have faith in your
reads, and follow through with them. Don’t let him goad you into continuing
to play a hand you suspect is beat, and don’t let him intimidate you into
folding a hand you think may be the best. Also remember that if you are a
good player, he probably won’t want to tangle with you either.

Even the best players give information to an observant opponent. A hallmark
of a great player is the ability to vary his play to such an extent that
opponents can never put him on a hand. Few players, even the experienced
ones, are able to do this completely, however. Focus on his actions. See if he
always bets a flop after he has bet before the flop. Take note of how often
he raises in late position. Whatever little bits of information you can pick up
about this player will add up, and create a picture that you can use to keep
him on his toes.

An exercise worth paying for

Some people want to play against the strongest players as a matter of ego.
They want to prove they can hold their own with anyone. If you do not see
poker as a source of income, and have money to burn, this is fine. But if you
want to
play poker to maximize your profit, it makes little sense to go after
tough games. Your objective should be to go after the weakest games you
can find. The money you make will generally help ease the disappointment of
not getting to face tougher opposition.

If you can’t avoid a strong player, simply play your
best poker game against
him. Be honest with yourself and take note of things he did that played on
your particular weaknesses. Although you would prefer to take the money of
weaker players, it is true that in poker, as in any other competitive activity,
going against someone better than you will ultimately make you better. If
you’re going to sit down at a table with such a player, take advantage of the
situation to learn everything you can and improve your game.
