Liz Lieu, one of the best female poker players today, challenged and defeated Erik Sagstrom, the top Internet player, in a $600,000 heads-up match at the Venetian poker room in Las Vegas. Lieu threw down the gauntlet after Erik "the Salmon" Sagstrom had called her fish at an online table.
The duel consisted of three $200,000 heads up matches with a fixed-limit structure of $2,000 /4,000. After one win each, Lieu won the deciding match after a number of bad beats for Sagstrom. At least, that‘s what Sagstrom claims.
Who is she then
As an attractive woman and a successful poker player, Liz "Poker Diva" Lieu is one of the rising stars of the game who is generating a great deal of attention. She is one of the many gifted players to come out of the small Asian nation of Vietnam, a group that also includes 2005 Player of the Year Men Nguyen, former World Series of Poker Champion Scotty Nguyen (the two players are not related), and poker professional John Pham, who is Liz’s closest friend on the tour.
Born in 1974 in Vietnam and raised in Colorado, Liz learned poker at 18 while helping a friend set up a home game. Like many professional poker players, Liz eventually found herself dealing in casinos before finally moving to playing live cash poker games. Although much of Liz’s fame springs from her having placed fifth in the $1500 No Limit Hold’em event at the 2005 WSOP, she is relatively new to the tournament circuit. Since 2001, Liz has found most of her poker success playing professionally in high stakes cash games in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Having discovered an affinity for tournament play, she is now adding tournaments to her poker repertoire.
There's no looking back
Liz followed up her impressive performance in the $1500 No Limit Hold’em event with another excellent finish in the $5000 No Limit Hold’em event, this time exiting 12th. A few months later she padded her tournament earnings with a fourth place finish in the Bellagio’s Fiesta al Lago $2,500 No Limit Hold’ em tournament in Las Vegas. She then went on to finish 5th in the $5,000 No Limit event in the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods, and 5th in the $2000 No Limit Hold’em event at the 2006 Gold Strike World Poker Open. Liz has showed off her Limit Hold’em tournament skills as well, winning the $970 Limit Hold’em event at the 2006 L.A. Poker Classic outright.
With her tournament success it is likely we will be seeing Liz at a number of final tables in the future. Keep your eyes peeled for this welcome addition to the poker tournament scene.
