Interesting WSOP Events There are a lot more variations of poker at the WSOP than just No Limit Hold'em.
When most people think about the World Series of Poker, they think no-limit Texas hold’em. You should be aware, though, that the World Series of Poker features over 40 events, and not all of them are no-limit Texas hold’em. The game that is farthest from no-limit Texas hold’em is probably Razz. Razz is seven card stud, but played all for low. Aces count as a low card, and straights and flushes do not count against you, so A 2 3 4 5 (“The wheel”) is the best possible hand. Razz is a game that flummoxes even the most hardened poker professionals, and while many strong players hate the game, it is accepted as a real test of poker skill.
In 2006, a little over 600 players showed up to play poker in the Razz event, which, while eclipsing most of the main event fields in World Series history, is an extremely small number of players for a World Series of Poker event in the modern, post-poker boom era. It was however, by far the largest field for a World Series of Poker Razz event. The event’s final table featured some hardened professionals, including “Miami” John Cernuto, Carlos Mortensen and Ron Ritchie. Eventually, James Richburg took the bracelet and a little under $140,000 for his efforts.
Another event that usually attracts a small field is the ladies no-limit hold’em event. However, poker has become so popular in this modern age that the 2006 event attracted over 1100 players. This means that more women played in this World Series of Poker event than there were players of any sex in any main event before 2004. This would certainly indicate that women are poised to take their place in the poker world. The popularity of this event may be in part due to the fact that the previous year’s winner was fairly well known before winning, but not for poker. Actress Jennifer Tilly, who learned to love the poker game from her boyfriend, poker professional Phil Laak, took the bracelet in 2005, and probably inspired a lot of other women to try to take their shot. Participants in the 2006 event included Tilly, actresses Mimi Rogers and Shannon Elizabeth, and poker pros Kathy Liebert and Jennifer Harman. None of them made the final table however, and Mary Jones ended up with the bracelet and over a quarter of a million dollars.
These are just a couple of the events that make the World Series of Poker such an exciting spectacle to watch. It’s not just about the main event. This is a true series, and even if you can’t make the $10,000 final, there’s plenty of action to observe or even be a part of at the World Series of Poker.
