Classic Hands from the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 1998 WSOP Champion Scotty Nguyen
The World Series of Poker is the most well known and memorable poker tournament in the world. It was the first event of its kind to be televised, and many of the final table hands have been captured by one camera or another. Some of these hands are so memorable that they have been seen and remembered by a great number of poker enthusiasts.
One such hand occurred in 1998. The largest World Series of Poker main event to date, 350 people playing Texas Hold em had gotten down to merely two: Investment analyst Kevin McBride, and Scotty “The Prince of Poker” Nguyen, one of a growing number of extremely talented Vietnamese poker professionals. On the key hand, McBride, with QT suited in the small blind, made it 50,000 to go. Nguyen called with J9 off suit. Nguyen did not betray a thing as the flop hit him hard, an 8 with two 9s. He let McBride bet, and made a deliberate call. When the turn came an 8, making Nguyen 9s full, he continued to let McBride hang himself, checking and calling. The river came another 8. Nguyen moved all-in, hoping to represent a bluff on a board where he knew he could not lose. McBride, smelling something fishy, pondered the call.
Nguyen stood up, bottle of beer held confidently in hand, and uttered in his extremely distinctive cadence, the now immortal poker words: “You call, gonna be all over baby.” This was all McBride needed to hear. Convinced that Nguyen really was trying to talk him out of a call, McBride announced: “I call. I play the board.” Nguyen flipped over his J9 and took his place among poker’s elite, after talking his opponent into calling off all of his chips with no hand to give Nguyen the championship.
Since winning the championship, Scotty Nguyen has enjoyed a great deal of poker fame. His distinctive style and manner of speaking, fearless and gifted poker game and his charm have made him one of the more popular players on the circuit. He has a poker tournament named after him at the Cherokee Casino in Tulsa and a number of tournament successes to his credit, including four World Series of Poker bracelets and a World Poker Tour championship. Scotty Nguyen was famous for saying that it was going to be all over. But for Scotty Nguyen, when McBride made that call, his poker life had just begun.
