2006 Borgata Winter Poker Open Debuts with a Full House
|
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (January 20, 2006) - The first day of competition of the
Borgata Winter Poker Open is underway and unlike the temperatures
outside, things are already heating up as a full house of over 1160 players
swarmed the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for the first event of this inaugural
tournament series. A buzz is happening amongst the players thanks to the
fully loaded 2006 Cadillac Escalade that will become the property of one lucky
player who participates in the first eight events of the Winter Poker Open. A
random drawing will decide the winner of this beautiful piece of automotive
machinery.
In addition to dangling the first Cadillac Escalade as a winner's prize, Borgata
has upped the stakes for the $10,000 World Poker Tour main event by
throwing a surprise second Cadillac in the pot. With first-place payout
estimated to be over $1 million, the Borgata Winter Poker Open main event
champion will drive away with the cash, the car, and a $25,000 seat at the
World Poker Tour's World Championship.
While much of the talk may be about the money and cars, the Borgata has
spent time focusing on the need to give back to the community and has done
so by donating a $10,000 seat into the World Poker Tour main event to the
winner of a charity tournament put on by Boston Red Sox player, Gabe
Kapler. The baseball star runs The Gabe Kapler Foundation, a non-profit
foundation dedicated to stopping domestic violence.
Originally, the winner of the Kapler charity tournament was set to win a paid
seat, but the previous sponsor of the event failed to provide the $10,000
entry fee. Kapler then contacted the Borgata and after becoming aware of
the situation, the Borgata graciously donated a seat to The Gabe Kapler
Foundation tournament winner. The donated seat is another philanthropic
gesture by the casino, which also runs the Borgata Heart & Soul Foundation.
According to Borgata's recently appointed CEO, Larry Mullin, helping keep the
integrity of Kapler's tournament by supplying the winner a seat into the main
event was an easy decision. "We respect Mr. Kapler and his charity, so upon
learning about the dilemma, we felt that the only appropriate action was to
do our part to support a noble cause like The Gabe Kapler Foundation."
With the cards hitting the tables today, things are only bound to intensify as
the buy-ins escalate and more players take their shots at hundreds of
thousands of dollars in prize money and two sleek yet powerful Cadillac
Escalades.
In a first for Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, poker fans will be able to keep up
