EVENT #14 – MICHAEL KEINER

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Event #14 Michael Keiner

The winner of the $1,500 buy-in Seven-Card Stud championship was Michael Keiner. He is a professional poker player from Frankfurt, Germany. He is 48-years-old.
Keiner was a medical doctor, before turning poker pro. He specialized in cosmetic surgery. Keiner won seven major poker tournaments in Europe before this feat – his first poker tournament win in the U.S. With this victory, Keiner now has five WSOP in-the-money finishes dating back to 2000. First place paid $146,987.
Keiner is the third gold bracelet winner from Germany in WSOP history. The other two players are Matthias Rohnacher (1997) and Eddy Scharf (2001, 2003). In fact, Keiner was motivated to play more events at this year’s WSOP by his friend and rival, Eddy Scharf – the two time WSOP event champ. Occasionally, when Keiner spoke to his fellow countryman inside the poker room, Scharf was known to reply in German – "Speak up Michael – I can’t hear you because my two gold bracelets are rattling in my ears and making it difficult to hear you." Steamed by this, Keiner was determined to play no less than 19 events this year – concentrating in the non-hold’em events with smaller fields. This gave him (numerically) a better chance to win his own gold bracelet. Mission accomplished.
Keiner is certainly accustomed to taking risks. He was wildly successful with his stock investments during the 1990s. However, he openly told the media he "lost millions" in the stock market. Easy come, easy go. Many of his exploits are chronicled at: www.michaelkeiner.de
For Keiner, his first WSOP victory was as impressive as it was satisfying. He pummeled a final table with at least two bona fide superstars. Two-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Barry Greenstein finished in fourth place. Former WSOP champion (2004) Greg "Fossilman" Raymer finished in sixth place. This was one of the more educated final tables in recent memory. The eight finalists included two (former) attorneys, a high-tech entrepreneur, a Harvard M.B.A. and a former doctor from Germany who beat them all – and became a poker champion.

The winner of the Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em World Championship was Jason Warner from Vancouver, BC (Canada). He is a 22-year-old sales associate working in a hardware store and (was/is) an aspiring professional poker player.

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner

Tournament Notes:
-- The winner of the $1,500 buy-in Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em World Championship was Jason Warner from Vancouver, BC (Canada). He is a 22-year-old sales associate working in a hardware store and (was/is) an aspiring professional poker player.
-- This was Warner’s second time to enter a WSOP event. A few days ago, he busted out of the $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament. First place today paid $481,698.
-- Warner works at a home supply store named "Surrey New and Used" located in Surrey, BC. The store is similar to Home Depot or Lowe’s in the U.S. No word yet on whether or not Warner plans to continue working after winning nearly half-a-million dollars.
-- Warner has been playing poker regularly at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC over the past year. He is single.
-- Warner wore a New York Yankees baseball cap while seated at the final table. Oddly enough, his heads-up opponent was David Zeitlin – from New York City. The runner up collected a very respectable $269,778.
-- This was the third final table broadcast over the official WSOP website – www.worldseriesofpoker.com. The entire final table was broadcast with hole cards seen by the home audience. Expert commentary was provided by Scott Preston (who is fantastic doing the play-by-play) and the "Clown Prince of Poker," Mike Laing – who stood in for Brian Wilson (also doing first-rate work). The broadcast is truly revolutionary in the depth of content and coverage and is "must viewing" for any poker fan.
-- The oldest player of the final six was 39-years. The youngest was 21.
-- Joe Awada, former circus juggler turned poker pro, finished ninth. He won a WSOP gold bracelet in 2004.
-- Arguably tournament poker’s hottest player over the first half of the year, J.C. Tran from Sacramento, CA, cashed in 15th place. Tran has over $5 million in lifetime tournament winnings – but less than ten percent of that impressive sum has been won at the WSOP.
-- Seven-time WSOP gold bracelet winner finished in 48th place in this event. He now has 43 lifetime cashes (ranked 8th all-time). He has won over $3M at the WSOP (ranked 16th all-time).
-- At least two poker players have already cashed three times at this year’s World Series – Steve-Paul Ambrose and Tony Cousineau.

2007 World Series of Poker News Flash: Busiest Day in WSOP History

2007 World Series of Poker

Rio All-Suite Casino and Hotel

NEWS FLASH!

2007 World Series of Poker Continues to Smash Records!

"It’s Official: June 9, 2007 is the busiest day in WSOP history."

3,009 Tournament Players Pack into the Rio in a Single Day

Las Vegas, NV (June 9, 2007) – The World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light entered its second week. The world’s biggest and richest sporting spectacle shows no signs of slowing down. Today, the largest number of poker players ever to enter a single day of events filled the Rio All-Suites Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.
The two tournaments held today combined for a record 3,009 entries. The $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event attracted 2,628 entries. The $2,500 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. championship attracted 381 players (which was also the largest H.O.R.S.E. tournament in history). No single day in the 38-year history of the WSOP has been busier. In fact, the huge turnout is believed to be the biggest tournament day if any poker event held anywhere.
"We are off to a terrific start this year," said WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. "I continue to believe this will be the best World Series of Poker ever."
The record number bested the old mark by 11 participants. Just seven days ago 2,998 tournament players registered for the day’s events. Both tournaments on this day are expected to play through Monday, June 11. First place in Event #15 will pay $637,254 and 270 players will receive prize money. First place in Event #16 will pay $238,881 and will pay 876 places.
The largest poker tournament in history remains the 2006 WSOP $10,000 buy-in championship event, with 8,773 players. However, that official "Day One" was divided across four separate dates, due to the enormous size of the field.

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Event #11 Chris Reslock

The winner of the "Seven-Card Stud World Championship" at the 2007 World Series of Poker is Chris Reslock. He is originally from Chicago, IL. Reslock, now 58, lives and plays poker for a living in Atlantic City, NJ.
Before turning to poker as a career, Reslock was a licensed taxi driver. When casino poker was first legalized in Atlantic City in 1993, Reslock started playing $10-20 hold’em games. He started making more money at the poker table than as a driver. So, with confidence he could make it as a pro, he quit driving and started to play poker full-time.
The longer story of how Reslock changed careers is near-legendary. Unsure as to whether he could make it as a pro poker player, Reslock planted his taxi in the parking garage at one of the big casinos – a sort of insurance policy that in case things did not work out, the cab was always there to pay the bills. The taxi sat in the garage for a week. Then, a month passed. Then, several months passed. Reslock never even bothered to go back to the casino to see if the car had been towed. Given that he has won over a million dollars in tournaments, and acquired a fair sum from cash games as well, don’t expect Reslock to be behind the wheel of anything other than a luxury car from now on.
Reslock’s breakthrough tournament win was in 2003 at the "Showdown at the Sands" in Atlantic City. In 2005, he won the WSOP Circuit championship at the Atlantic City Showboat (good for $335K). That event was televised by ESPN. With the win, he qualified to play in the 2006 Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas. He took fourth place in that tournament (netting $150,000), which was filled with former champions. Reslock won his first WSOP gold bracelet after finishing in the money four times. First place paid $258,453.
The runner-up was poker superstar and five-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Phil Ivey. David Oppenheim finished in third place. He is noted for playing in the highest cash games in the world. Considering the stiff competition Reslock faced in this event, his victory is all the more impressive.

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Event #11 Chris Reslock

Tournament Notes:
-- The winner of the "Seven-Card Stud World Championship" at the 2007 World Series of Poker is Chris Reslock. He is originally from Chicago, IL. Reslock, now 58, lives and plays poker for a living in Atlantic City, NJ.
-- Before turning to poker for most of his income, Reslock was a licensed taxi driver. About ten years ago, Reslock started playing $10-20 hold’em games in Atlantic City casinos. He started making more money at the poker table than as a driver. So, with confidence he could make it as a pro, he quit driving and started to play poker full-time.
-- Reslock’s breakthrough tournament win was in 2003 at the "Showdown at the Sands" in Atlantic City.
-- The runner-up was poker superstar Phil Ivey. He fell just short of capturing his sixth WSOP gold bracelet. This was Ivey’s 26th lifetime cash at the WSOP. At age 31, he is the youngest player to reach that mark in WSOP history.
-- David Oppenheim finished in third place. He is noted for playing in the highest cash games in the world. Considering the stiff competition Reslock faced in this event, his victory is all the more impressive.
-- The first female player to make a final table appearance at the 2007 WSOP is Oriane Teysseire. She is from Paris, France. She finished in 7th place.
-- Marco Traniello is fast becoming one of poker’s elite. He cashed yet again in this event and become the first player to make it to two final tables at this year’s WSOP. He finished ninth in the pot-limit hold’em championship four days ago. A surprising fact: Now with 13 cashes since the 2005 WSOP, he has finished in-the-money more times than any other poker player in that same period.
-- Jerrod Ankenman finished in 10th-place in this brutally tough field. It was Ankenman’s second cash so far this year. Ankenman is noted for being the co-author of "The Mathematics of Poker" along with two-time gold bracelet winner Bill Chen.
-- The 13th-place finisher was Thor Hansen, originally from Norway. With this cash, he jumped up into 18th-place on the all-time lifetime cashes list. Hansen now has 35.
-- Johnny Chan moved up in 16th-place all-time (cashes) with his 18th-place showing. However, a much-anticipated Chan-Ivey final table did not materialize.
-- The crowds inside the Rio to watch all three days of this star-studded event were most likely the largest crowd collectively to ever assemble for a seven-card stud tournament. Several thousand poker fans took turns along the rail to star gaze and watch poker history being made.
-- Maureen Feduniak has certainly paid her dues as a poker tournament player. She has entered countless WSOP events over the past decade. She came close to winning her first gold bracelet last year. Feduniak put up a noble fight in this event and ended up as the 17th-place finisher.
-- The final table was played on the ESPN stage, which has been deemed the "poker arena." However, after five straight nights of filming, the cameras were turned off. That did not dampen the spirit of the competition as a large crowd assembled to watch most of the final table competition.
-- This event has become the de facto "Seven-Card Stud World Championship." It is the highest buy-in stud event in the world. It attracts the toughest field of any competition, by far. It is a World Series of Poker attraction. Now and henceforth, it shall be the official world championship of the game.
-- Speaking of the WSOP’s official website, a new feature debuted tonight. WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack writes "The Commish’s Corner" – a personal blog that will chronicle his views of the biggest and most prestigious sporting event on the planet. Pollack’s vision has piloted poker into its next sonic boom and his forthcoming comments should prove insightful and interesting. The Commish’s Corner can be found at: http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/blogs/blog_post.asp?blogID=790

Tournament Notes:
-- The winner of the $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em championship was Will Durkee. He is a 24-year-old graduate student at Northwestern University in Chicago. Durkee is originally from Pittsburgh, PA.
-- Durkee received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. He graduated in 2005. While in college, Durkee excelled as both a student and an athlete. He was "Honorable Mention All-American" in NCAA Division I wrestling as well as an "Academic All-American." He holds a degree in economics.
-- This was his fourth time to cash at the World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light. He won over half-a-million dollars. First place paid $566,916.
-- Phil Hellmuth, Jr. finished in 104th place in this event. That means he added to his margin as the all-time "Number of Lifetime WSOP Cashes" leader – now with 58. Men "the Master" Nguyen is second – currently with 54.
-- Todd Terry finished in third-place. He also won a WSOP Circuit event at Harrah’s Atlantic City in 2006.
-- This was the second tournament at this year’s WSOP to be broadcast by official media partner, Bluff. Earlier this week, Event #6 marked the debut of the nearly-live simulcast on the official WSOP website – www.worldseriesofpoker.com. For the first time in history, the entire final table is being broadcast with hole cards seen by the home audience. Expert commentary is provided by poker pro Brian Wilson (who won a WSOP gold bracelet in 2005), ESPN’s Howard David (who is normally the radio voice of Monday Night Football), and others.
-- Players are sequestered during play at the final table. Noted poker writer (and PhD psychologist) Tim Lavelli has coined the perfect term for this new poker arena. "The Sequestrium," he calls it. History will decide if the label sticks.

WSOP GOLD BRACELET WINNER

EVENT #9 – ALEX KRAVCHENKO

Below is a photo of Event #9 winner Alex Kravchenko. Photos are courtesy of ImageMasters Photography.

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Alex Kravchennko

The winner of the $1,500 buy-in Omaha High-Low championship was Alex Kravchenko, from Moscow, Russia. He is a 36-year-old businessman originally from Archangel, USSR. He has been playing poker for about eight years.
Kravchenko became the first Russian citizen in history to win a WSOP gold bracelet. Russian immigrants have won previously at the WSOP, including Ralph Perry last year. But Kravchenko’s victory is clearly a milestone.
Kravechenko has an impressive history of poker tournament wins in Europe. He won the Austrian Masters Pot-Limit Championship in 2001. He also won the Russian Pot-Limit Championship that same year. His most recent win before this was a Limit Hold’em title at the Helsinki Frezeout in 2002. He has cashed over 30 times in what is becoming an illustrious poker career.
This was Kravchenko’s third time to cash at the WSOP (twice last year). He won $228,446 for first place.
It wasn’t easy. This was the largest Omaha High-Low turnout in WSOP history. The event attracted 690 entrants. The previous best was 670 for last year’s turnout.

WSOP GOLD BRACELET WINNER

EVENT #8 – MICHAEL CHU

Below is a photo of Event #8 Winner Michael Chu. Photos are courtesy of ImageMasters Photography.

2007 WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner Michael Chu

The winner of the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Re-Buy Championship was Michael Chu. He is a 27-year-old stock trader from Los Angeles, CA. Chu was born in Seoul, South Korea. He is currently single.
Chu holds a degree in political science from University of California – Berkley. However, he has been playing a lot of poker lately, an investment of time and money that paid off in the amount of $585,774 for first place. Perhaps just as, if not more meaningful was the WSOP gold bracelet he received, designed by Corum -- which was latched to Chu’s wrist at the conclusion of the tournament. The gold bracelet was presented by WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. The entire final table event and ceremony was record for later broadcast on ESPN.
With this in-the-money finish, Chu cashed for the first time at the WSOP. This was a $1,000 re-buy tournament, which meant players could re-enter and continue to play if they busted out – provided they posted another $1,000 entry fee. Most players made re-buys at some point. Some players re-bought many times. One player made eight re-buys ($8,000). Incredibly, Michael Chu did not make a single re-buy in this event. He made his initial investment back 584 times over.
Chu, the stock trader in his day job, was quite pleased with the return on this WSOP investment.

2007 World Series of Poker Event #9 Winner Alex Kravchenko.
Tournament Notes:
-- The winner was Alex Kravchenko, from Moscow, Russia. He is a 36-year-old businessman originally from Archangel, USSR. He has been playing poker for about eight years.
-- Kravchenko is the first Russian citizen in history to win a WSOP gold bracelet. Russian immigrants have won previously at the WSOP, including Ralph Perry last year. But Kravchenko’s victory is clearly a milestone.
-- Through Event #9, this year’s WSOP has crowned champions born in four different countries -- Russia, South Korea, Ireland, and the United States.
-- Kravechenko has an impressive history of tournament wins in Europe. He won the Austrian Masters Pot-Limit Championship in 2001. He also won the Russian Pot-Limit Championship that same year. His most recent win before this was a Limit Hold’em title at the Helsinki Frezeout in 2002.
-- This was Kravchenko’s third time to cash at the WSOP (twice last year). He won $228,446 for first place.
-- This was the largest Omaha High-Low turnout in WSOP history. The event attracted 690 entrants. The previous best was 670 for last year’s OHL8. However, the 2006 event had a larger total prize pool since the buy-in was $2,000 instead of $1,500.
-- Former WSOP gold bracelet winner Dr. Max Stern cashed in 56th place. He now has 24 lifetime cashes and over $750,000 in WSOP tournament winnings.

2007 World Series of Poker Event #8 Winner Michaeal Chu

Tournament Notes:
-- The winner was Michael Chu. He is a 27-year-old stock trader from Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Seoul, South Korea. Mr. Chu is currently single.
-- Chu holds a degree in political science from University of California – Berkley.
-- With this event, Chu cashed for the first time at the WSOP. This is his second year to play at the WSOP. He paid the $1,000 cash entry fee. First place paid a whopping $585,774.
-- This was a $1,000 re-buy tournament. That means players can re-enter and continue to play if they bust out – if they post another $1,000 entry fee. Most players re-buy at some point. Some players re-buy many times. One player made eight re-buys ($8,000). Last year in this same event, pro player (Daniel Negreanu) made 47 re-buys – which is $47,000 inversted. Incredibly, Michael Chu did not make a single re-buy in this event. He made his initial investment back 584 times over.
-- The runner-up was real estate mogul Tommy Vu. This is the same Tommy Vu who appeared in countless late-night infomercials back in the 1980s and 1990s touting his real estate seminars. His famous line was, "I make you rich! Come to my seminar!" In his TV spots, he was often surrounded by luxury cars and beautiful models. Vu brought the same flair to this final table. He enjoyed a vocal cheering section, but fell short of victory.
-- 2003 main event finalist Amir Vahedi (and one-time gold bracelet winner) went out in seventh place.
-- The fourth-place finisher was Dolph Arnold, a longtime WSOP veteran from Houston, TX. Arnold has been coming to the WSOP since the 1980s and was seeking his first win.
-- So, far, this year’s WSOP has crowned champions from Russia, South Korea, Ireland, and the United States.
