Tournament Report
Gavin Smith is the Chip Leader in WSOP Circuit Championship
at Harrah’s New Orleans
Day One ends as many of the biggest names go bust;
57 players set to return for Day Two
The second annual Bayou Poker Championship began with a rousing
rendition of the National Anthem and words of tribute for the city of New
Orleans.
“I’m not sure this has ever been done by anyone in poker before,”
announced Jack Effel, Tournament Director for the World Series of Poker
Circuit moments before the start of the main event. “I want to take this
moment to dedicate the $10,000 championship event to the wonderful
people of the city of New Orleans, who have been such wonderful hosts. You
are the real champions!”
Next, 2005 World Series of Poker Champion Joe Hachem spoke for many
poker pros when he took the microphone and announced that he decided to
come to New Orleans from his home in Melbourne, Australia especially to
demonstrate his support for the city. Further, Hachem pledged 10 percent of
his tournament winnings in this event towards the Katrina Relief Fund. He
encouraged his fellow poker competitors to do the same. Many players
signed a pledge banner near the front of the tournament area, agreeing to
make a donation with any winnings.
After remarks by Poker Room Manager Rick Korte and a special appearance
by New Orleans Police Officer Lucious Jackson, the entire Showroom of the
Harrah’s New Orleans Casino erupted in cheers, and the $10,000 buy-in
championship event began.
Former WSOP gold bracelet winners in the main event included Chris “Jesus”
Ferguson, Barry Greenstein, Joe Hachem, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Kathy
Liebert, Mike Matusow, Yosh Nakano, Erik Seidel, and John Spadavecchia.
Other top pros included Gavin Smith, Eric Lindgren, Hoyt Corkins, Josh Arieh,
and Andy Bloch. Last year’s WSOPC-New Orleans champion Walter
Chambers played. Also, two-time event winner at this year’s tournament
Bach “B” Vu was in attendance.
However, most of the big names busted-out on Day One leaving a wide mix
of players with different backgrounds and levels of experience to return for
Day Two.
Currently, at the top of the standings is Gavin Smith, a Canadian native who
now lives in Las Vegas. Smith has exploded onto the poker scene in recent
years, with several final table appearances and at least one million dollar win
(last year, at the Mirage in Las Vegas). Smith also made it to a final table at
the 2005 World Series of Poker at the Rio. If he goes on to win, this would
be his first WSOP-related victory.
Play is expected to get more intense over the next day. ESPN will provide full
coverage, including the final table, which will take place on Sunday afternoon
at 2 pm. Play will continue tomorrow until 27 players remain. Prize money
will go to the top 18 finishers – including first prize, $532,950. Play resumes
tomorrow at 12 noon CST.
