T-12. John Phan - 59,500
14. Lance Allred - 58,500
Play resumed at 3:00 pm Friday. The first four players eliminated were Juha
Helppi (14th), Lance Allred (13th), David Tran (12th), and Raja Kattamuri
(11th).
The final ten players redrew for seats at the final table. Here were the
updated chip counts:
1. Joseph Miceli - 380,000 (seat 10)
2. Jean "Prince" Gaspard - 340,000 (seat 7)
3. Don Barton - 244,000 (seat 4)
4. Jeff Knight - 240,000 (seat 6)
5. Ray Millard - 150,000 (seat 5)
6. Marcel Luske - 140,000 (seat 8)
7. John Phan - 130,000 (seat 2)
8. Enrique Leigue - 80,000 (seat 9)
T-9. Stuart "Donator" Paterson - 60,000 (seat 1)
T-9. Wayne Boich - 60,000 (seat 3)
Paterson moved all in with pocket tens against Knight's Ah-Kh. Paterson led
the entire way -- until it mattered most. The board came Qd-4d-3h-5s-Kd,
giving Knight a pair of kings on the river. Stuart Paterson was out in 10th
place.
The next major hand was nearly the same, but this time Knight had the
pocket tens against Liegue's A-Q. Knight got lucky again as his pocket pair
held up, and Enrique Liegue was out in 9th place.
After a flop of 10c-8d-8h, Barton moved all in with pocket sevens (7d-7h), and
Luske called with As-10s (pair of tens). The turn card was the 9c, giving
Barton additional hope with an open-ended straight draw. The river card was
the Kh, and Barton was crippled to just 12,000 in chips. The next hand,
Barton was all in with K-7 suited against Knight's 9-8 suited. Knight paired his
eight on the flop to bust Don Barton in 8th place.
Boich moved all in with As-8c against Miceli's 4c-3c. The board came
Qc-10d-7s-2c-3d, giving Miceli a pair of threes on the river to win the hand,
sending Wayne Boich home in 7th place.
Millard moved all in with Q-7 suited against Phan's 5-4 suited. The flop came
A-10-2, giving Phan a gut-shot straight draw. The turn card was a 3, and
Phan clinched the hand with a wheel straight. Ray Millard was out in 6th
place.
Gaspard was all in with Kh-9d against Miceli's Ad-Jd. The board came
10c-6c-3d-Qh-4d, and Jean "Prince" Gaspard was out in 5th place.
Miceli was all in with A-Q offsuit against Phan's pocket tens. Phan led the
entire way on a board of J-8-3-J-10, hitting a full house on the river. Joe Miceli
was sent to the rail in 4th place.
After a flop of Q-9-7, Knight moved all in with Q-x (pair of queens), but Luske
called with pocket aces. The last two cards were blank, and Luske's aces held
up. Jeff Knight went home in 3rd place.
The final showdown would be between John Phan and Marcel Luske. Phan
has a strong track record here, with nearly $750,000 in WPT tournament
winnings in recent years. But Luske has history on his side as well -- he won
Event #2 ($2,000 No-Limit Hold'em) in this tournament a year ago.
It all came down to this. With the board showing 9c-3c-2c-2h on the turn,
Luske bet 300,000 into a pot worth about 200,000. Phan thought for several
minutes, saying, "I won't call. I'll either muck or raise all in." Luske warned, "If
you go all in, I'll call." And that's what happened. Phan moved in with Jd-3h
(two pair, treys and deuces), and Luske showed 10c-6c -- a flush. Phan
needed a two or a three on the river to survive, but the last card was a
blank. John Phan finished as the runner-up in 2nd place.
Marcel Luske won Event #9 ($3,000 No-Limit Hold'em), earning $315,630, a
gold Bellagio bracelet, and a $25,500 seat in the WPT World Championship
on April 18th. It is his second title in two years here at the Five-Star World
Poker Classic, and Luske now has over $650,000 in tournament winnings at
Bellagio.
