Notes: Winner receives $25,500 entry into WPT Championship
Tournament Report
The 2006 Bellagio Five Star World Poker Classic continued Tuesday with the
final table for Event #6 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em). On Monday, 493 players
entered the tournament, playing until about 3:00 am before stopping play
with 13 players:
1. Hoang Nguyen - 226,500
2. John Roveto, Sr. - 175,500
3. Chuck Kelley - 141,000
4. Davood Mehrmand - 134,500
5. Larry Watson - 128,000
6. Michael Fitzpatrick - 123,000
7. Emil Bayan - 107,000
8. Brent Burns - 98,000
9. Al Ardebili - 94,000
10. Ricky Zilem - 89,000
11. Robert Durant, Jr. - 58,500
12. George Marlowe - 54,000
13. David Byer - 47,500
Play resumed at 3:00 pm Monday, and it didn't take long to reach the final
ten-handed table. The eliminated players were George Marlowe (13th), Emil
Bayan (12th), and Robert Durant (11th).
At that point, they redrew for seats at the final table:
1. Hoang Nguyen - 270,000 (seat 1)
T-2. Davood Mehrmand - 200,000 (seat 3)
T-2. John "Kicker" Roveto, Sr. - 200,000 (seat 6)
4. Michael Fitzpatrick - 180,000 (seat 4)
5. Brent Burns - 160,000 (seat 9)
6. Chuck Kelley - 130,000 (seat 5)
T-7. David Byer - 100,000 (seat 7)
T-7. Larry Watson - 100,000 (seat 2)
T-7. Ricky Zilem - 100,000 (seat 8)
10. Al Ardebili - 30,000 (seat 10)
Ardebili was so short-stacked that he moved all in with 8-5 offsuit. Fitzpatrick
called with Q-J, and the flop came A-J-9, giving Fitzpatrick a huge lead with a
pair of jacks. Ardebili needed something runner-runner to survive. The 5 on
the turn gave him a lower pair and five outs. But the last card was a 3, and Al
Ardebili was sent home in 10th place.
Watson was all in preflop with A-J against Byer's pocket eights. The flop of
Q-J-10 gave Watson a higher pair, but Byer could regain the lead with a nine
for a straight. The turn card was -- a 9. Now Watson was behind, and he'd
need a king on the river to stay alive with a higher straight. But the last card
was a blank, and Larry Watson was out in 9th place.
Soon after that, Roveto reraised all in from the big blind with pocket sixes
(6d-6h), and Burns called with a dominating pair of nines (9c-9h). The flop
came Kd-Qs-5d, and Burns retained the lead with his higher pair. But the 10d
on the turn gave Roveto a diamond flush draw. It turns out he wouldn't need
it -- the river card was the 6s, giving Roveto a set to win the hand. Brent
Burns was eliminated in 8th place.
Fitzpatrick was crippled to a short stack when Nguyen doubled through him in
an aces-vs.-kings situation (Fitzpatrick had the kings, and they didn't
improve.) So he found himself all in with Ac-3c from the small blind, but he
was dominated by Byer's Ad-Qd. The board came As-Jh-5h-7h-Qs, and
Michael Fitzpatrick was out in 7th place.
A few minutes later, Kelly moved all in from the button with pocket kings
(Kc-Ks). But once again, it wasn't the best hand -- Byer had pocket aces
(Ad-As) in the big blind. The board came Qs-Jc-8s-6d-4d, and Chuck Kelly was
sent home in 6th place.
The final five players went on a break before the blinds increased to
6,000-12,000 (2,000 ante). Here were the approximate chip counts:
1. Hoang Nguyen - 475,000 (seat 1)
2. John "Kicker" Roveto, Sr. -- 380,000 (seat 6)
3. David Byer - 330,000 (seat 7)
4. Davood Mehrmand - 180,000 (seat 3)
5. Ricky Zilem - 100,000 (seat 8)
Ricky Zilem hadn't been involved in any big hands, and was just staying alive
at the bottom of the chip counts. But he stopped by to talk to the media,
asking us to send out a shout-out to his friends who were following the
action from afar. Why do I mention this now? Just wait and see.
Those five players battled for over two hours when Mehrmand moved all in
with pocket tens (10c-10s), and Byer called with pocket aces (Ad-As). Byer
retained the lead after the flop of Kh-Jh-4s, but the 10h hit the turn to give
Mehrmand a set. Byer would need an ace (for a higher set) or a queen (for a
straight) to win the hand. The last card? The Qh. Byer made his ace-high
straight, and Davood Mehrmand was out in 5th place.
After two hours without an elimination, the floodgates suddenly opened. A
few minutes after Mehrmand's exit, Nguyen moved all in with pocket nines
(9d-9h) against Byer's As-8s. The flop came A-7-7, and Byer took the lead.
Nguyen would need a nine to stay alive, but the last two cards were 5-7.
Hoang Nguyen was out in 4th place.
A few hands later, Roveto raised preflop, Zilem moved all in, and Roveto
called with Ad-10d. Zilem showed pocket kings (Kh-Ks), and Roveto would
need to improve to stay alive. The board came Js-10s-6h-4c-3s, and John
"Kicker" Roveto, Sr. was out in 3rd place.
The final two players were Byer and Zilem. Byer had nearly a 2-to-1 chip lead,
with about 1,000,000 to Zilem's 550,000.
But that situation would change on a board of Jd-10h-4s-4c-As. Zilem's 6-4
made trip fours, while Byer's A-Q made a lesser pair of aces. It was a
monster pot worth over 700,000, giving Zilem the chip lead.
Byer limped from the small blind/button, and Zilem checked his option to see
a flop of 9h-5s-4d. Zilem checked, Byer bet 25,000, and Zilem said, "You can't
make me fold with that." Zilem called, and the turn card was the 6c. Zilem
checked again, Byer bet 55,000, and they talked some more before Zilem
min-raised to 110,000. Byer paused before moving all in, and Zilem
immediately called with 8d-7d for a nine-high straight -- the nuts. Byer
showed 3h-2c, giving him an inferior six-high straight, and he was drawing
dead. (The meaningless river card was the 10s.) David Byer was out in 2nd
place.
Ricky Zilem won Event #6 ($1,500 No-Limit Hold'em), earning $233,045, a
gold Bellagio bracelet, and a $25,500 seat in the WPT World Championship
on April 18th. He had a slow first half to this final table, but he made up for it
late, winning the hands when it mattered most.
