Tournament Report
Play Commences at our final table with the small blind at $400 and the big
blind at $800. There are just a few minutes left in this level from the night
before when the final nine players were determined. No hands of significant
play occur before the time limit expires. The new blinds are $500 and
$1000. Shortly after the blinds increase, Manley Freid doubles through Chris
Trotto. The flop is 10h-9h-3d; Freid checks, Trotto bets and Freid calls. The
turns shows up the 7c and once again Freid checks. Trotto bets $2000; Freid
calls all-in. The river is the Qc. Freid turns over the Qs-10s to Trotto’s pocket
pair of K’s. Freid wins the hand with two pair.
9th Place:
Pre-flop; the action goes to three bets between Paul Lee and Paul Darden.
John Lorenz, in the big blind declares all-in. The flop is the 4c-Kc-7c; betting
continues between the two live players. The board pairs with K’s on the
turn. The river is a club giving Lee the nut flush and the pot. Lorenz leaves
the game in 9th place.
8th Place:
Freid pushes all-in. Chris Tsipraildis calls in the small blind and the big blind,
Kip Williams checks. The final board shows on the flop the 10s-Jd-6s, with
another 6 on the turn and an 8 on the river. Williams holding a 6/ 8 wins the
pot with a full house. Fried is out in 8th place.
7th Place:
7th Place is determined just a few hands later. Darden raises followed by an
all-in from Chris Trotto. Tsipraildis, in the small blind, calls to join the action.
Darden bets the flop of 7c-4h-Kh; Tsipraildis folds. Another heart on the turn
gives Darden the flush. Trotto visits the cashier in 7th place.
6th Place:
Pocket 5’s held by Williams fall to a pair of K’s caught by Patrick Poels when
the flop comes 7s-4s-Ks. The turn and river do not affect the outcome of this
hand. Williams takes home 6th place.
Time expires, the players take a break and the blinds increase to
$1000/$1500. Three players hold about $50,000 in chips, one player
approximately $40,000 and the short stack $20,000. A few hands later, Tam
Ho picks up chips from Darden when his A/5 off-suit high cards the board.
Very little significant action occurs in this blind level. Time expires and the
blinds increase to $1000/$2000.
5th Place:
Darden on the button folds. Poels calls in the small blind; Tsipraildis checks
the big blind. The Qd-3h-6h is followed by a 6s and 9h. Pocket A’s held by
Poels prevail. Tsipraildis exits in 5th place.
4th Place:
Action stalls again before this hand occurs between Tam Ho who goes all-in;
called by Lee. Lee flops a pair of deuces with an A kicker which holds up to
win the pot. Tam Ho takes down 4th place.
The blinds increase to $2000/$3000 after which a pot is chopped between
Darden and Poels. A nine high straight on board saves Poels pocket Q’s
from destruction by Darden’s pocket A’s. Later Poels flops a set of 5’s losing
to Lee’s pocket A’s when a deuce hits the river giving Lee a five high
straight. Poels and Lee volley the short stack position to Tam Ho for what
seems like eternity.
3rd Place:
Lee two bets pre-flop called all-in by Darden in the small blind and Poels in
the big blind. Action continues between Lee and Poels. The flop is 8c-2c-10c;
check/check. The 3d is bet by Poels and folded by Lee. The river washes up
a 3s. Poels takes down the pot having flopped two pair, 8’s and 2’s. Darden
checks out in 3rd place.
A rough chip count has Poels around 60k to Lee’s $170k. Several of the next
hands change the stack position between the players. One of particular
interest goes down as follows.
Lee has the button/small blind and raises two bets to Poels who three bets.
Lee calls the big blind raise. The flop is 8s-9s-Qd. Betting action gets to six
bets before call occurs. The 2d on the turn is bet and called. The river is the
9d. Lee shows a J/K to Poels pocket J’s for the win with two pair; J’s and 9’s.
Up go the blinds to $2000/$4000. Poels has control of the chips with
approximately 160k to Lee’s 76k.
2nd Place/ 1st Place:
Final action comes down shortly thereafter. Lee with the button/small blind
calls the big blind Poels. After a flop of 3h-7c-7h, the pot is raised until Lee is
all-in. The turn is the 8d and the river the 6c. Lee shows down the Ah4h for
2nd place. Poels turns over pocket Q’s as the winner of 1st place and the
WSOP gold ring.
