John Kimmons Wins: No Final Table Action Necessary with $302,800 Prize Pool
|
Event #11 $200 + $30 No Limit Hold’em with multi-rebuys ($100,000
guaranteed) drew 583 players who generously contributed to the prize pool
with an amazing 931 rebuys. The prize pool swelled to over $300K and each
player was serious eyeing the first prize of $109,000. It was the enormous
size of the prize pool that got the players to discuss a deal before the final
table was set.
Prior to setting the final table, the players agreed on a deal that kept the
cards grounded and we never got to hear “shuffle up and deal.”
A key hand that occurred late in the tournament was one of the last
eliminations. The UTG player raised all-in for his last $20,000. With antes of
$2,000 and blinds of $6,000/$12,000, everyone folded to the big blind who
called. Anthony Guadagni, in seat 9, showed A-10 and seat 10 showed a
dominated A-2. The board was 6-9-3-5-5 and seat 10 was eliminated and
Anthony more than doubled up with all the dead money in the pot.
The field had some notable players including Men “The Master” Nguyen who
built his stack effectively and finished in 4th place in chips. Men, with 6 WSOP
bracelets and 43 first place finishes, encouraged the other players to make a
deal by his very presence. John Kimmons, the chip leader, said to Men, “I’m
only making a deal because I don’t want to tangle with you.” Men agreed
with John’s assessment.
Another pro player, Anthony “bbwolf” Guadagni, who has had 5 final table
finishes in the last 90 days, had a disappointing WSOP this year with only
one cash, but feels he is on top of his game and this 3rd place finish certainly
demonstrates this feeling. I won’t be surprised if Anthony takes down a
Legends of Poker event in the near future.
Gaetano Lo Grande was another finalist with recent success in tournament
poker. He just cashed in the 2006 WSOP Main Event. Gaetano won an entry
to the Main Event on-line through a $200 satellite. He parlayed his $200 into
a 517th place finish (8,773 entries), late in day three, for a $22,266 payday.
Gaetano is an owner of a Real Estate Closing Service and will be taking some
more time off of work to play in future Legends of Poker events, including the
$10,000 Championship WPT event starting on Saturday, August 26, 2006.
The WPT final table of this event will be filmed live at The Bicycle Casino and
have a guaranteed $1,500,000 first prize.
Prior to the final table seating, the players were feverishly trying to reach a
deal for the remaining amount of the $302,800 prize pool. There was
enough to go around and each player had their own idea of what they were
worth. Eventually, they agreed on a deal and not a single hand was dealt at
the final table. Did this pose a problem for this author? Not exactly. I only
need to write about the fact that there’s nothing to write about…. Right?

BIOGRAPHY
John Kimmons is a general contractor from Reseda, California. He has been
playing poker for about three years and plays both tournaments and cash
games. John’s game of choice is Limit Hold’em and he plays $30/$60 &
$40/$80. This is John’s first tournament win although he has cashed in
several tournaments before. He was taught Hold’em by a good friend and
has read countless books on the subject. His favorite book is “The Tao of
Poker” by Larry W. Phillips. This book and his business ownership have
allowed him to better control his “character defects” and treat people better
at the poker table. “Poker is an emotional game, and I sometimes get
frustrated and take it out on others.” said Kimmons. John would like to
dedicate this win to his good friend Mike Bowen, who provided John with the
introduction, education, and understanding of Hold’em. Mike, you should
have seen all his chips—truly outstanding.
